Spanish 101: “¡Yo encanto Miami!!”

Although the Spanish influence of Miami is undeniable, like most exotic places, the residents speak at least a little English. However, here are the top Spanish phrases that might prove useful during your “dias y noches calientes” of WMC! And, even if everyone does speak English, try out your Spanish to make your Miami stay a little more authentic.

• The obvious: “Hola, adios, por favor, gracias, de nada” for Hello, Goodbye, Please, Thank you, You’re Welcome. It’s always important to be polite when you’re un turista!
• When renting a beach chair for the day: “¿Senor, cuanto cuesta una tumbona?”
• When giving your taxi driver directions: “Senor, necesitamos ir a  ________________________ por favor” (You might fill in the words “la playa” for beach, “el club” for club….)
• If you need help in any situation: “Necesito ayuda porque ____________________” (You might fill in the words “mi amiga esta enferma” for “my friend is sick” or “estamos perdidos” for “we are lost”)
• When asking where something is located: “¿Donde es el club Space?”  “¿Donde es Collins Avenue?”
• When you feel inspired by the hot Miami WMC nights: “¡Yo encanto los DJs a WMC!” or “¡Me gusta las noches del Miami durante el WMC!”

If  you aren’t feeling quite so confident with your Spanish speaking skills, don’t worry; during WMC everyone does speak the same language: Music.

What do you do next when you’re the most popular DJ in the world? According to the one man who currently holds this distinction, you continue to search for inspiration and elevation through your music.

Tijs Verwest, better known to fans around the globe as DJ Tiesto, told MixMag in a 2009 interview that in spite of his tremendous success he has found a renewed sense of energy and passion for his DJ/ production career; as if that was ever lacking! It is pretty certain we will be “walking in the clouds” with this Dutch trance god when he comes to Miami for Winter Music Conference 2010.

Tiesto is set to headline (and most likely close) the Main Stage, Day #1 of Ultra Music Festival. With signature airy trance melodies and harder-edged, progressively-styled techno anthems, Tiesto has built his reputation as a live act through more than just his music.  Tiesto creates a party environment at his show that puts him center stage,  always ready to entertain the crowd. Unlike some DJs who prefer hiding out in the dark (I’ll leave names out!), Tiesto’s performance style is high energy and animation; he pumps his fist, smiles, and all the while still manages to work his “Magik” on multiple turntables.

What tricks will he have up his sleeve? With a light show that consistently defies explanation, the audience at this year’s UMF should expect what Tiesto is known for delivering: a mind-bending panorama involving  intricate, engaging visual sequences flashing across the screen.  It’s not hard to figure (from my experience) that at the very least, we will see Tiesto’s signature logo (his famous bird design) and a series of psychedelic images inspired by the songs on his newest cd release Kaleidoscope. The album, released this past October on his new label Musical Freedom, boasts noteworthy collaborations with breakthrough UK producer/songwriter Calvin Harris, pop engeneue Nelly Furtado, indie duo Tegan and Sara, and the ingeniously funky Sneaky Sound System.

What about the music? Whether you’re new to Tiesto or a long-time fan, here are a few song downloads (and some suggestions) that I think will get you pumped for a wild UMF Friday night:

Among Tiesto’s major accomplishments as an artist, he holds the distinctive honor of DJ’ing at the Opening Ceremony for the 2004 Summer Olympics, and, more recently, Tiesto performed to a sold-out crowd at London’s O2 Arena. Having won numerous awards, including many IDMA’s, some of us (including me) are still excitedly waiting for him to win that elusive, much-coveted and well-deserved Grammy Award for Dance Music.

Ultra Music Festival will be held on March 26 and 27 in Bicentential Park, Downtown Miami.

Are you one of those people who enjoys getting hands-on creative?  Are you a serious Deadmau5 fan?  No matter what level of Deadmau5 fan you are, it’s clear: people love him, his music, and that insanely cool head of his.  If you’ve been to a Deadmau5 show in the last year or two, you’ve likely seen a few Mau5heads dotting the crowd.   It’s a good bet we’re going to notice some people walking around during Winter Music Conference 2010 sporting their very-own home made Mau5head…

Maybe you, too, want to show the people attending WMC your love for one of your favorite electronic music artists?  Good news: the folks over at Instructables have put together a short tutorial that shows you exactly how to make your own Deadmau5 head.  Complete with clear pictures, construction materials and a step-by-step guide, this tutorial gives you exactly what you need to know.

Be prepared, however: this is definitely a project that  requires patience, the proper materials, and a bit of time.  But if you’re willing to commit, you’ll be turning heads when you walk through the crowd at this year’s Ultra Music Festival.   And hey — if you’re ready to take this project to the next level, who knows?  You might even be able convert an old disco ball into Mau5head like the one you see here:

Does the 2010 Ultra Music Festival lineup deserve EPIC status? In our opinion, so far the lineup looks very promising – GREAT status – but it could use a couple more headliners (hint – Daft Punk, Justice, even Lady Gaga would do it for me, she has a killer show) to get my EPIC vote. Even so, we have to give it to UMF for the lineup thus far, the talent is super strong and all the acts are very solid.  We can’t wait to find out who they add to the lineup during the next month.

Here is what our friend Richard had to say about the lineup…

There are no epic acts listed thus far.  I have seen Deadmau5 3 times in 2009 and it has basically been the same sets, sticking to his produced tracks.  I saw Groove Armada in Ibiza and they were just alright for me, definitely not epic.

Hopefully, Ultra is just sending out teaser information and list will get deeper with A list talent.  Everyone wants Daft Punk, and that would be EPIC, but will the band even tour in 2010?  I agree that Lady Gaga would be fun, but she is touring Australia right around Ultra.  Acts like Sneaky Soundsystem, Justice, Empire of the Sun, Phoenix, Cut Copy and Miike Snow would be huge additions to this lineup.  You want epic?  How about Deep Dish make a return on the main stage?  Or how about Sven Vath bring his Cocoon entourage and invades Miami?  Or Ricardo Villlalobos even sets foot in America??!

What about the Minimal Tech super stars like Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Loco Dice, M.A.N.D.Y., Tiefschwarz, Marco Carola, Magda, Paco Osuna, Guy Gerber, or Damian Lazarus?  There is nothing to support the best in electronic music, in my humble opinion.

The best “act” they have listed is Tiesto simply because his showmanship and lights are impressive on the main stage.  Also his sound-system and engineers are unparalleled. – Richard Iavarone
