This year, the Swedish House Mafia are making their exclusive Winter Music Conference appearance at the Ultra Music Festival. Though there are always a multitude of reasons to attend the Ultra Music Festival, what usually lures me in are the festival’s exclusive appearances. Typically, I would rather see most DJs and other acts in a smaller club on an off night, rather than on a huge stage at an outdoor festival. This is just a personal preference; I prefer an intimate performance in a hot, sweaty club, where the energy level is packed tight into a small space. However, as dance music has grown, so have the production values, the sound, the showmanship, and the audience. This is where the magic of the Ultra Festival comes in, because there are some shows that simply cannot be scaled down into a smaller space.
The Swedish House Mafia is something of an electronic supergroup, made up of Axwell, Sebastien Ingrosso, and Steve Angello. All three are superstar level DJs and producers, but when they join forces it is truly a special event, as they bring their own lightshow and a huge production that is usually only seen at huge stadium-sized rock and roll events. The Swedish House Mafia hardly ever make it out to perform in the States, but when they do, it tends to become the stuff of legends, the nights that people talk about while shaking their heads and muttering, “You just had to be there to understand…”
