It’s Ladies’ Night every night when you are around amazing women. Los Angeles based singer/songwriter and conference veteran Cari Golden lets us in on some tricks for Winter Music Conference…and these tricks are not for kids.
What is the must attend party for WMC?
There are events which are literally a NO FAIL. The Wednesday party at Nikki Beach is always a perfect tone-setter for the week. Last year I opted out of quite a few day parties in favor of just hanging at the pool at the Standard chatting with a lot of the people whose work I really admire. That was probably more fun than anything.
My slam dunk favorites are always Steve Bug, Hawtin, Adam Beyer and Joel Mull, Guy Gerber, anyone from the Mobilee roster (Anja Schneider, Sebo K, Pan Pot), the Get Physical crew and Sunday School for Degenerates. If there’s a boat party and you can afford to do it, do it!
A lot of the hotel day parties seem to be filled with bonehead douchebags a lot of the time and can be really expensive, so I usually opt for night parties or smaller rooftop events. Last year the Cecile and Oslo party blew my face off and so did Kate Simko at Grass. My taste is definitely tech and minimal, and I don’t deal with crowds of people that look like they could cast the next season of Jersey Shore very well, so if you are of like mind opt for parties involving the above talent. I did actually attend Ultra one year and I was a bit overwhelmed with it all- but if that’s the only place you can see a slam dunk Carl Cox set, well, then you gotta go.
What’s the key to having a good time at Winter Music Conference?
Keep in mind: the cops in Miami made sport out of busting parties last year and disbanding them. Particularly the Sony rooftop venue. I went two nights in a row and both times the cops really strong-armed the promoters. Essentially there is a symphony orchestra in that building, so the bass from the party above would bleed into the concert hall! Yikes! Thankfully, by night two Lee Burridge and Kenneth Gibson (AKA [a]pendics shuffle, my absolute favorite of all) smartly rolled off the bass till the cops left and we got around the issue!
More important than anything is to be smart about how you party and get through the week with minimal damage to your internal organs, so don’t forget to eat (even if you don’t want to!) and drink lots of water between all that booze and other nonsense!!! Oh, and have fun without me….boo hoo!

haha .. interesting post… but……. the must do events…..Ultra is great cuz you get to see everyone.. yes it is a bit overwhelming .. it is good… day event.. then you end up at Space which is a must do event……start partying there around midnite… goes til like 2pm the next day.. party ends up on their rooftop…terrace.. nice.
Looking forward to this yr.
Ultra can be a love/hate. If your not blown away from the lineup, your more than likely going to hate your self for spending to get in, spending on crazy expensive water, and rotting in the sun. Then there is always the chaos of multiple raging outdoor sound systems being heard at once. Like I said, if you love the line up, none of that matters and its great. Beware otherwise.
