The Street Scene: How (Seth Herzog’s) SWEET It Is

Seth Herzog is a comedian, actor, and dancer writer, and has been a staple to New York’s comedy scene for over 15 years.  Herzog has appeared in Role Models, The Ten, and The Baxter, and is currently working with Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

In addition to being funny and awesome, he also produces and hosts, SWEET, a weekly comedy show at The Slipper Room, which started back in August 2004… over five years ago!!! Not only is this New York’s longest running weekly comedy show, but it’s probably longer than most of you have even lived here.

The whole show came about almost 10 years ago when – according to a recent interview Herzog did with Heeb Magazine-

“Back in 2001, comedian Josh Weinstein began a show called “The Industry Room” at a little store front theater space on West 44th. He asked me to be a producer and be a weekly part of the show. So right when I was starting to take stand up seriously, I had a show to do whatever I wanted. My friends really enjoyed coming down each week— watching me and everyone take risks and be silly and do our new bits and hanging out afterwards. In 2002, “The Industry Room” died when Josh and co-prodcer John Viener moved to LA.

My friends kept asking me when I was going to do another show so we’d have somewhere to hang out each week. So in August of ’04, “Sweet” began at the Slipper Room to great fanfare. The first show had Michael Showalter and Zak Orth, Demetri Martin, Ed Helms, David Wain and Paul Rudd.

And the rest was history.  Since then, week after week, many well known and rising comedians, and Seth’s mom (not kidding) come together at The Slipper Room. In the past month, SWEET has made some headlines for guest comedians Justin “I’m a Mac” Long, Jeff Ross, and stage crasher John Mayer.

I attended last weeks show to finally see what the hype’s all about. I got there for 9PM, and what seemed to be the coldest day in the history of earth, did not stop the crowd from coming…it was a packed house.  If you ever plan to go, I recommend getting there early and grabbing a seat! *Standing in the back while people conversate with each other, and talk about what they ate for dinner while your trying to hear what’s going on since you can barely see the stage… is kinda annoying* In true ‘Zog fashion, SWEET, closed out 2009 with a bang with an all star line up, The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi as co-host for the evening, and performances by Greg Barris, The Daily Show’s Wyatt Cenac, Seth’s Mom (a recurring skit, “What’s on my Mom’s mind”) and Williamsburg’s finest, Reggie Watts.  Seth warmed up the crowd with a few dance moves and a v. funny skit about what it’s really like to celebrate New Years Eve in the city – a pretty accurate depiction.  I urge to you peep all these comedians as they are all very funny- but just want to quickly shout out Reggie Watts – who’s performance was quite different from the normal stand up routine, and is mostly improvised and consists of random singing and sound effects in various shifting personas, mixed with beat-boxing and a loop pedal.   Pretty effing ridiculous and interesting to say the least.  You can currently catch him opening up for Regina Spektor on tour.

Tonight’s line up is….

Morgan Murphy: From NBC’s “Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard” and Robin Williams’ latest gut check “World’s Greatest Dad.”
Dave Hill: Internet sensation and the star of MOJO’s “The King of Miami” (which is now airing in the UK.) You can watch him in his new show “Dave Hill: Big in Japan” at the UCB before it hits London for a week!
Ardin Myrin: From FOX’s “Mad TV,”  E!’s “Chelsea Lately,” Comedy Central’s “Michael and Michael Have Issues.” “Evan Almighty” “What Women Want” o”Reno: 911″ and “The Gilmore Girls. ”

Hurry! Call your friends and go!!!!

Urban Daddy’s Holiday Party Blew My Mind

Coming from a girl who works in events and marketing, I have been to a lot of top notch events… I’ve been there, done that, seen it all, until last night.  The team at Urban Daddy and BMF Media really pulled out all the stops for this shin dig.   A Diamond is Forever slash Winter Wonderland was the theme of the night and the Steve Weiss Gallery looked beautiful.  Below are some pics via Guest of a Guest – visit the full gallery HERE. How amazing does this party look?!?!

Custom holiday cocktails were provided by Patron (The Whole Collection) and Veuve Clicquot, the amazing staff ensured your glass was never empty.

The food! oh the food! Duck! Lamb! Lobster! Crabs! Oysters! Oh My!

The Dessert Bar of ALL Dessert Bars

Mia Moretti was on decks.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings entertained the crowd with a live performance.

I am still hungover and am trying to wrap my mind around of the events of last night.  Brittney from Chichi212 did a bang up job on reviewing the evening – so if you want more deets - peep them here.

After the party was over, me and my wingwoman headed over to the Breslin for a few more drinks – which turned in to be quite the night.  I won’t go in to detail – but there was a lot of interesting conversation to be had.

PS- The Breslin is REALLY nice – great vibe, friendly staff, one of the best hotel bars/restaurants in the city – has that old school, sophisticated, vintage vibe. Very classy.  Located inside The Ace Hotel, The Breslin is brought to you by Spotted Pig Alums Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield.  I would try and go there soon – before it’s like The Jane – and is over before it really started.

Lonely This Holiday Season? BK Holiday Meatup Tonight! 7PM!!!

Brooklyn Based and Fucked in Park Slope have joined forces to create a naughty office  holiday party for all to attend and get their swag on.  This half-holiday / half-singles mingle party is guaranteed good times for all, here’s the full scoop:

There’s nothing like a weekend filled with loved ones and turkey to remind you that the holidays are much more fun when you’re hooking up with someone.

So Brooklyn Based and FIPS are throwing a holiday office party Wednesday, Dec. 9 that will make it much easier to meet that special person. You don’t have to work for Home Base Supply Co. to be invited, but you do have to abide by our company policies, which include hitting on your colleagues, free massages, getting Shootbooth portraits with hot Santas (hot farmers Michael Grady Robertson of Queens County Farm, Annie Novak and Ben Flanner of Rooftop Farms, plus hot Meat Hook butcher, Ben Turley), eating delicious Asiadogs, and getting down with a DJ who only goes by his porn name, Jonny Con Carne.

We’re not guaranteeing everyone will find true love, but based on what happened at the last 600-strong Meatup, we can predict many of you will meet your match.

Now, some of you may just hook up the Bell House, but a few of you will continue to date long after you go home together. Still others may leave feeling it was awkward to go up to a stranger (even though that stranger is at a singles party and dying to meet someone too), but we will have some special incentives this time to ease the introductions. Of course, we’re big fans of steeling your nerves with strong drinks, like the free Chivas scotch that will be flowing from 7-8pm or the $3 Busch beers all night long.

The hilarious Sara Schaefer, who hosted the last Meatup’s Wet T-shirt contest (it’s true, men lined up to bare their chests), will also be awarding employees who’ve been naughty and nice. You can vie for the “Hottest Employee of the Year” honor now, by faxing in a racy photocopy to 646-964-6540. (If you don’t have a fax, we’ll accept a scan via email.)

You can hem and haw and wait until the day of to buy tickets, but buying one now (here) will guarantee two things: you’ll save $3, enough for one more Busch, and you’ll allow us more time to do some expert matchmaking in advance.

And remember, this whole thing’s a numbers game, so pass this on to your (platonic) girlfriends and guy friends. We may make it easy to score, but only if there are enough players to field two teams.
